887,713. Nuclear fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 11, 1958 [March 29, 1957], No. 10390/57. Divided out of 887,712. Class 39(4) A sheath or can 5 for a nuclear fuel element (Figs 2, 3) is provided with fin elements 4 each of which includes a lip portion or portions 6, 7 inclined to the plane of the fin. The fins may form part of a helix of small lead. The edges of the lips may be ground so that they are parallel to the axis of the can. The lips of adjacent fins are aligned parallel to the axis of the can or lie on a helix of large lead. in a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the lips 6, 7 are inclined in the same direction, i.e. upstream relative to the flow of coolant gas. In another modification, Fig 7, the fins 10 are eccentric with relation to the can, the lips 11, 12 being formed at the parts of the fins extending the minimum and maximum distance from the can. The fins promote circulation of the coolant and improve heat transfer.
