Abstract

1343877 Fuel elements COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 17 July 1972 [29 July 1971] 33279/72 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel assembly of the type comprising a bundle of canned fuel pencils 10 arranged parallel to each other in an envelope 12 bounding a coolant duct has a sheet metal member 16 bearing on the envelope 12, the member 16 taking the form of a number of thin panels each placed up against an inside surface of the envelope 12 and having corrugations 18 not parallel to the fuel pencils 10, and determining the minimum spacing between the peripheral pencils 10 of the bundle and the envelope 12. The minimum spacing between each fuel pencil 10 and the adjacent pencils is determined by helical bracing members 14 borne by the pencils over at least most of their length. The corrugations 18 may in cross-section be semi-circular (or semi-elliptical) or be sharp-cornered bends, and they may extend transversely of the fuel pencils 10 or be inclined thereto. The sheet metal member 16 is formed with perforations so that the coolant can flow freely through the corrugations and reduce pressures tending to deform the sheet metal member. The perforations are formed in the corrugations 18 as evenly spaced holes (20, 20a) (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) or as occasional discontinuities or saw cuts. The sheet metal member 16 may be corrugated only over that part opposite the fissile material-containing regions of the fuel pencils 10, in which case those parts of the member 16 upstream and downstream of the corrugated part are thicker than the latter and bear on the bracing members 14 of the adjacent fuel pencils. The fuel assembly described is for use in a liquid sodium cooled fast reactor.
