Abstract

887,699. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 7, 1959 [July 11, 1958], No. 22273/58. Class 135. A body 11, Fig. 1, has an inlet 14 leading to a pair of chambers 18 through a space 15, the chambers 18 being each provided with a leakage outlet 19 terminating in apertures 21, 22, Fig. 3, at a smooth-flat body-face 23, Fig. 1. Each chamber 18 is connected by a passage 25 to the opposite ends of a valve 13. A shaft 12 rotatable about an axis normal to the face 23 has two flat faces in close proximity to the face 23 which register with the apertures 22, 23, as shown. Upon rotating the shaft any given amount from the neutral position shown one aperture is wholly or partially opened and the other correspondingly closed whereby the pressure in one chamber rises and that in the other chamber falls and the valve 13 is accordingly moved. The obturating end of shaft 12 is cut away to provide reaction faces so that as the shaft is displaced from the neutral position the fluid flow over it either tends to increase or reduce this displacement or to have a zero effect, depending on the shaping of the reaction faces. The obturating end of shaft 12 is recessed between the flat faces, but the latter may be provided on the ends of projections. The shaft may be turned by hand or an electromagnetic device in an automatic fluidcontrol system. The apparatus may be used in a system controlling an aircraft control surface, not shown. The shaft, which may be positioned in a container forming part of a closed circuit, may be immersed in the operating fluid; the leakage fluid may drain to a reservoir in which case the shaft is not immersed but is exposed to the atmosphere.
