887,525. Heat treatment of metals. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Nov. 26, 1959 [Dec. 16, 1958], No. 40528/58. Class 72. [Also in Groups XI and XXXVII] Apparatus for use in induction heating comprises a work coil and a work holder arranged to support a workpiece on its upper end and arranged for up and down movement, the work holder being movable downwardly into a quenching liquid and being provided with an ejector to remove the submerged workpiece, the work holder then returning to a desired position. As shown, a work piece 9 is attached to spigot 55 and heated by H.F. coil 1 which is brought into proximity with it. While heating, the workpiece is rotated with sleeve 16 and the parts associated therewith by gear 14 which engages ring gear 15. The workpiece is then quenched by air cylinder 23 lowering rod 26 and the components forming the workholder below the level of the liquid of the bath. When flange 18 of work table 53 engages stub 35 the table is tilted and workpiece 9 is removed by stripper 56 from spigot 55, falling down curved plate 48 onto conveyor 49 by which it is removed from the quench bath. Before the workpiece reaches the level of the bath, shutters 28 close above it to restrict flame and fume. A wide variety of shapes of heating coils for different shaped work pieces are disclosed (Figs. 6-10, 12 and 13 not shown) and the Specification includes an automatic control circuit (Fig. 15 not shown).
