Class 112 In a zig-zag sewing machine the needle bar is mounted in a swinging gate pivoted on a rod adapted to be secured in angularly adjusted position in the machine frame, the portion of the rod carrying the gate having an axis offset from and parallel to the axis of the portion of the rod turnable in the machine frame, whereby the rod may be adjusted angularly to align the pivotal axis of the gate with the pivotal axis of a co-operating lockstitch looptaker. The vertical needlebar 8 is mounted in a gate 45 formed with lugs 47 pivoted on a central portion 48 of a vertical pivot rod. At the lower end of the latter is an enlarged head 52 pivoted in a lug 51 on the machine frame 4. A reduced portion 55 at the upper end of the rod is pivoted in a fixed lug 50. The axes of head 52 and portion 55 are aligned, and are offset from and parallel to the axis of portion 48. The pivot rod may be turned, by means of a screw-driver slot 60 in head 52, to align the axis of portion 48 with the axis of a vertical-axis oscillating hook. Screws 57 and 54 (not shown) are provided in the lugs 50 and 51 to lock the rod in adjusted position. The gate is oscillated by a pitman 61, the rear end of which carries a block abutting a plate through which the pitman passes. The front end of the pitman is fixed adjustably by a screw 64 to a bracket 62 pivoted on a pin 63 carried by the gate. A collar 58, fixed to portion 58 by a screw 59, abuts lug 47. A torsion spring 77, connected between collar 58 and the gate, biases the latter angularly to hold a follower element, associated with pitman 61, against a pattern cam.
