Doughnuts or other foodstuffs to be cooked in oil are placed in trays 10 loaded through an opening A on to openwork baskets 9 suspended from a conveyer which carries them through heated oil in a tank 3 in the lower part of the oven, the conveyer then returning them to the opening A through a draining space immediately above the tank. The tank is removably mounted in the oven and is heated by a steam pipe 4 or other means. The conveyer is driven by a motor 12 through a variable speed gearing.
