A biscuit wrapping machine has a first mechanism for folding a corrugated wrapper around a batch of biscuits so as to form an open-ended sleeve, and a second mechanism for applying an outer wrapper having a sealed joint offset from the joint in the inner wrapper. Batches 3 of round or oval biscuits on an intermittently moving conveyer 1, are raised at station B, between plungers 5 and 6, to a station C where they are held by spring loaded grippers 9 whilst the lower plunger 5 descends to a position, as shown, level with a support plate 10. A corrugated wrapper 11 is fed on to the plate 10. The lower plunger 5 is then raised to trap the wrapper 11 between the biscuits and itself, the grippers 9 open, and the plungers 5, 6 descend to return the biscuits to the conveyer 1, this action causing the support plate 10 to fold the wrapper 11 to U-shape. At station D the tails 11A of the wrapper are turned down by folders 18 and 19 and a short strip of adhesive tape is applied by known means over the joint. The wrapped biscuits are then carried to a further station (not shown) where they are raised against a wrapper of waxed paper or heat sealable film. The outer wrapper is then sealed at the bottom of the batch of biscuits. This seal is diametrically opposite to the joint of the inner wrapper 11. Feeding inner wrappers. The inner wrappers are stacked in a magazine at the rear of the mechanism shown and the lowermost wrapper is displaced by a reciprocating plunger such that it is fed between rollers on each side of the path of movement of the plunger 5 at the level of the plate 10. Endless belts, driven by the lowermost rollers, carry the wrapper beyond the rollers. Alternatively, instead of feeding the corrugated sheets from a stack, a continuous web of corrugated paper may be fed from a reel in a direction parallel to the length of the conveyer 1 into the position occupied by the magazine, and sheets are then cut periodically therefrom and delivered into position for wrapping by said rollers and endless belts.
