Abstract

1,185,236. Wrapping articles. REICHEL & DREWS Inc. 2 Nov., 1967 [3 Nov., 1966], No. 49951/67. Heading B8C. Wrapping articles.-As as article is pushed into an elevator compartment 152 (Fig. 2b) it carries with it a wrapper held by a suction head 212 which co-operates with the elevator compartment to fold the wrapper about the top and part of the bottom of the article (see also (b)- (c), Fig. 10). The elevator then moves upwardly so that the suction head folds the wrapper across the open face of the article and the article is then pushed from the elevator so that the suction head folds the end of the wrapper under the bottom of the article (see (d) and (e), Fig. 10). The machine illustrated wraps stacks of toilet rolls joined in pairs by wrapping bands. As the stack is pushed into the elevator it pushes apart spring-loaded ploughs 217 which tuck the leading parts of the sides of the wrapper. The base of the elevator compartment is formed by an endless belt 219 carrying a cleat 233 engaged by the stack as this is pushed into the compartment. The stack is pushed from the compartment by a pusher 271 formed with an extension 275 which engages the cleat 233 but which retracts when the cleat reaches the end of its stroke so that the pusher 271 can continue to push the stack from the compartment. As the stack leaves the compartment tucks are formed on the leading edges of the sides ((f), Fig. 10) by converging walls 282 (see also Fig. 9) which are pushed apart against springs by the package. The upper ears G (Fig. 10) are guided by rollers 297 (Fig. 9) to be pressed between a roller 292 and surface 294 while the lower ears H are pressed between surfaces 291, 293. The ears are deflected by guides 306C as they enter a glue-applying device 301. The ears are then folded by upper and lower ploughs (307), (308) (Fig. 8, not shown) moved inwards conjointly by a linkage operated by pneumatic cylinders controlled through a solenoid from feeler wheels engaging the sides of the package. The flaps are finally held by transversely spaced belts 331 (Fig. 9) and rollers as the glue sets. Feeding, serving and embossing the wrapper.- Wrapper web is fed by a driving roller 59 (Fig. 2b) controlled by a photo-cell 75 detecting the position of a dancing roller 73 and by an intermittently driven roller 78 controlled by a photocell 86 detecting marks on the web, to a gripper 87 which holds the leading end of the web while a portion held in guides 64 is cut transversely by a device 66. The web is pre-creased transversely by downward movement of a roller 67a and portion 67r of guide while the web is stationary. While the cut-off portion of the web is still held by the gripper 87 its trailing end is carried downwardly by a flight 9la on an endless chain conveyer. As downward movement of the wrapper continues it is released from the gripper 87 and held instead by the suction head 212 so that it is stretched between the suction head and a point 215a to hang across the entrance to the elevator compartment with the transverse crease at the bottom of the suction head. During its downward movement the wrapper edge receives glue from an oscillating roller 261 (Fig. 9). Feeding and arranging the articles.-The articles are fed by an endless conveyer on to a plate 110 (Fig. 10) where they engage a slanting end stop 110a which staggers the two rolls slightly. When limit switches indicate that both rows are complete the rolls on the plate 110 are pushed on to a plate 116 which then swings about a hinge to deliver the two rows of rolls, one on top of the other, on to a plate 132. When a complete stack has been formed in this way on the plate 132 the leading rolls operate a photocell which causes sheets of dunnage to be delivered by conveyers (163) (Fig. 5, not shown) from magazines (160) on to plates 174. The plates 174 are then swung upwardly to place the sheets in contact with the stack which is then pushed into the elevator as described above. During the first part of this motion the rolls are prevented from coupling by engagement with counterbalanced and damped swinging flaps 142 (Fig. 9).
