Abstract

886,330. Airfield jet-deflecting apparatus. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND Ltd. May 10, 1960 [June 25, 1959], No. 21867 /59. Class 4. [Also in Group XII] A gas stream deflector apparatus, adapted to be placed beneath the downwardly directed lift engines of vertical take-off jet-propelled aircraft when stationary, comprises a deflector member having two oppositely disposed concave surfaces G which are presented to the efflux gas stream and are effective to divide the stream into two portions which are deflected in opposite horizontal directions away from the aircraft. Two casings A mounted on wheels B and D are positioned back to back so that the propulsive gases impinge on deflecting sheets G, H and are emitted horizontally from outlets F. The edge GA of one sheet G has a lip which extends over the edge GA of the other sheet G to form a crest, which lies beneath the fore-and-aft centre line of the lift engines. Screw-jacks C, K are provided so that the two casings A may be lowered to the ground. The main undercarriage wheels may be located on hinged ramps J to ensure that the apparatus is correctly positioned.
