Abstract

886,133. Pipe joints ; pipe stoppers. UNITED AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS Inc. Feb. 12, 1960 [Feb. 25, 1959], No. 5185/60. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XVIII] A joint construction includes a pair of interfitting joint members assembled by relative axial approaching motion and having means thereon defining a groove containing a compressible 0-ring, means being provided for obtaining, in response to a relative axial approaching motion of the members to assembled position, first a radial and then a longitudinal compression of the 0-ring. As shown in Fig. 1, a pipe 10 is received at one end of an outer tubular member 11 and is provided with a flared end 15 which is engaged by a conical end portion 14 of an inner tubular member when the latter is screwed into the other end of the member 11. Hollow metallic 0-rings 32, 33, which may be internally pressurised are self-energised as described in Specification 752,760, rest against internal and external shoulders 24, 19 in members 11, 12 respectively, and are compressed longitudinally by the ends of a floating member 28 which abuts a shoulder 23 in the member 11 and which is formed with an inclined surface 34 engaging the flared end of the pipe 10. The members 11, 12 are formed with tapering portions 25, 21, 17 terminating into cylindrical portions 26, 22, 18, the tapered portions effecting radial compression of the 0-rings 32, 33. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, inter-engaged pipe ends 35, 36 having mating flanges 37, 38 secured by a clamp 39 are formed respectively with internal and external tapered and cylindrical surfaces for compression of a resilient 0-ring 48. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, a flanged pipe end 50 is engaged by a flanged closure member 49 bolted to the pipe end, the inter-engaging portions of the pipe end and closure member being provided with tapered and cylindrical surfaces for compression of an 0-ring 62.
