An electromagnetic counter comprises a plurality of numeral wheels rotatable on a shaft, a transmission mechanism between a drive gear on the shaft and the counter wheels and a zeroizing mechanism including a driven gear, the arrangement being such that when the transmission mechanism is in engagement with the counter wheels and drive gear, the zeroizing mechanism is out of engagement with those members, and vice versa. As shown, Fig. 1, an electromagnet 2 steps a ratchet wheel 6 through a pawl 5, the ratchet wheel 6 being connected to a driving gear 8 freely mounted on a shaft 23 carrying numeral wheels 20. Transfer pinions 13, adapted to co-operate with single teeth 22 on the lower wheels and driving gears 21 on the next higher wheels, are mounted on a shaft 12 carried by arms 10a, 11a of a bracket 9 which has arms 10b, 11b carrying a shaft 15 to which is fixed a driving gear 16, zeroizing pinions 17 being driven from the shaft 15 through slipping clutches 18. During counting the transfer pinions 13 are engaged and to effect zeroizing, a remote switch 32, Fig. 4, is depressed thereby cutting off the counting pulse input at f, and energizing a magnet 3 to rock the bracket 9 thereby engaging the pinions 16, 17 with the gears 8, 21 and disengaging the pinions 13. A relay arrangement A, B then supplies pulses over a contact e to the counter magnet 2 to step the numeral wheels 20 until individual stops 28 thereon contact a rail 25 pivoted on the arm 10a of the bracket 9.
