Abstract
1,032,436. Telephone dialer mechanisms. PERINI ELECTRONIC CORPORATION. March 4, 1963 [Dec. 31, 1962], No. 8477/63. Heading G5R. A motor 11 moves the transducer 22 against the force of a return spring 19, through a clutch which can be disengaged by a key mechanism and latched in the disengaged position until released by the return of the transducer. Construction.-As shown, Fig. 1, motor 11 drives shaft 13 through reduction gear-box 12. Clutch member 14, fixed to shaft 13, engages member 15 mounted on hub 16 which is free to rotate on shaft 13 and carries spring-spool 18 and chain sprocket 17. As shown in Fig. 3, transducer head 22 is mounted on carriage 23 which slides along two bars 24, 25. Endless chain 20 passes over chain sprocket 17 and idler sprocket 21 and is attached to carriage 23. Spring 19 wound on spring spool 18 has its free end 28 attached to the framework so that when clutch 14, 15 is released carriage 23 returns to the home position shown in Fig. 3. Key 30 actuates slidable bar 34, the end 35 of which operates clutch 14, 15. Bar 34 is latched forward by a spring-loaded latch 46 and thus holds clutch 14, 15 in its disengaged position. When carriage 23 returns to its home position it strikes and releases latch 46. Spring-loaded pawl 40 is mounted on bar 34 and engages ratchet wheel 39 the teeth of which operate button 38 of microswitch 37. Key 54 actuates pawl 40 to operate switch 37 without disengaging clutch 14, 15. Operation.-A broad magnetic tape with coded numbers on it is arranged below transducer head 22 and, after dialling a previous number, carriage 23 is stopped to the right of the home position. To dial the number recorded on the tape, key 30 is pressed. This releases clutch 14, 15 which is held open by latch 46 and spring 19 returns carriage 23 to its home position where it releases latch 46 which allows spring 48 to re-engage clutch 14, 15 and operate pawl 40 to step on ratchet wheel 39 to momentarily operate switch 37 which energizes motor 11 through a suitable circuit. The transducer head 22 is then driven across the tape until the recorded number has been dialled, when a circuit operates to stop the motor. Two-part numbers.-If the number to be transmitted consists of two parts, the motor is arranged to stop after dialling the first part. On receipt of dialling tone, key 54 can be pressed to re-energize the motor and dial the second part of the number without returning the carriage to its home position.
