Abstract

721,683. Electric signalling systems. SIEMENS BROS & CO., Ltd. Dec. 4, 1952 [Dec. 7, 1951], No. 28734/51. Class 40 (1). A display indicator comprises a number of mutilated discs in electrical contact with one another and co-operating with wipers so as to form a number of branches of a code circuit. In response to a code signal the discs control the driving of the display indicator until no circuit exists through any of the branches. Display members 8 are hinged to an endless chain 7 mounted on sprocket wheels 6, 15. Operation of an electromagnet 20 withdraws a latch 29 from a notched, wheel 10 and closes contacts 22 to energize a magnetic clutch (not shown) which couples the wheels 6, 10 to a constantly rotating shaft 40. The periphery of wheel 10 acts on the latch 29 to maintain contacts 22 between notches. The wheel 15 is connected through gearing and a Geneva-wheel mechanism to a set of mutilated discs shown schematically in Fig. 6, so that these discs are moved step-by-step each time a notch comes opposite the latch 29. The apparatus is set to starting position by closing contact R when circuit is made over R, discs 57, 58 and magnet 20 to drive the display apparatus until one of the notches in disc 57 reaches wiper 65 when the circuit is broken. A number to be displayed is entered in binary code on switches W, X, Y, Z and one or more of the discs 59-62 is then effective at each step to maintain magnet 20 until the desired position is reached. In a modification for displaying letters, five switches are used with five discs 58-62, the disc 57 being used for both feeding through a bridging wiper and for resetting through a single notch 65.
