Abstract
Unsaturated aldehydes of the formula <FORM:0885587/IV (b)/1> are obtained by oxidising olefines of the formula <FORM:0885587/IV (b)/2> in which n is 1-3, by reacting the olefine with from 5% to 50% by weight of mercuric sulphate based on the amount of olefine to be oxidised in the presence of aqueous sulphuric acid having a concentration of 5%-30% by weight at a temperature in the range 90 DEG C.-120 DEG C. in the presence of a large excess of a diluent gas based on the amount of olefine to be oxidised. Suitable inert gases are, for example, nitrogen, water vapour, gaseous saturated hydrocarbons, or the olefine which is being reacted. Examples are given of the oxidation of isobutylene to methacrolein and of a mixture of 2-methyl-1-olefines obtained by dimerisation of propene to give a mixture of 2-methylenevaleraldehyde and 3-methyl-2-methylene-butyraldehyde.
