Abstract
885,582. Electrostatic precipitation. RESEARCH-COTTRELL Inc. Oct. 17, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 35476/60. Class 39(1) In an electrostatic precipitator for oil fume aerosols there is a collecting electrode structure comprising a pair of spaced grids 34, 36, Fig. 1, and substantially spherical semiconductive bodies 40 of 3-4.5 mms. in diameter preferably 3.5 to 4.0 mms. packed in the space between the grids. The precipitator is preferably a two stage one having a preionising action 18 comprising high potential wire electrodes 30 with cantilever spring wire supports 31 and earthed electrodes 33. The semiconductive bodies are of glass or plastic and are disposed between high potential collecting grid 34 and earthed collecting grid 36. The spherical bodies 40 may enter at the top, be removed at a controlled rate from the bottom, cleaned and returned to the top. It is stated that by coating the semiconductive bodies with nickel oxide or MnO 2 ozone is geltered. There may be more than one collector system in series with alternate polarities or alternately energised and de-energised.
