Abstract

885,567. Heating liquids in bulk. JOYSULLIVAN Ltd., and BALL, F. C. July 6, 1959, No. 23092/59. Class 64(3) A heat exchanger for immersion in a tank of fluid comprises an annular chamber 23 formed between tubes 22 and 11 connecting with a header at one end and being open at its other end to allow the fluid to be cooled, e.g. hydraulic fluid from a motor, to pass through it, and a further separate annular chamber between tubes 11 and 14 which communicates with a header 17 and outlet 16 via ports 18 at one end and with the interior of the tube 14 and an inlet 12<SP>1</SP> to this tube at its other end for the passage of a coolant fluid. Members 24 and 25 space the tubes apart at the end remote from the header and the intermediate tube 11 may have extended surfaces in the form of ribs, a helical coil or fins of copper. Fluid to be cooled flows through the outer annular passage of the heat exchanger, which is inclined downwards, to discharge near the bottom of the tank and the fluid in the tank is drawn off through an outflow pipe terminating near the bottom of the tank but remote from the heat exchanger.
