Abstract

Amides are prepared by bringing an oxime in the vapour phase, in contact with an acid-reacting catalyst in the form of a liquid film. Such film may be maintained by the downward flow of a continuous stream of catalyst over an inert support. Acid-reacting catalysts are for example, polyphosphoric acid, silico-molybdic acid, molybdic acid, sodium hydrogen sulphate and Friedel-Crafts catalysts. The oxime vapour may be diluted with inert gases and may also be admixed with a polymerization inhibitor. Suitable starting materials are dialkyl ketoximes, diaryl ketoximes, alkylaryl ketoximes, alkyl aldoximes and aryl aldoximes, which yield linear amides, and cycloalkanone oximes, which yield lactams, e.g. epsilon-caprolactam.
