Abstract

Hydrocarbons, which form crystals and melt without decomposition, are purified by adding to a melt of the crude compound the same substance in crude solid finely divided form while maintaining the melt in an adiabatic state and, after melting equilibrium is reached, separating purified crystals of the compound from the melt. Among compounds which may be purified by the process are, for example, cyclohexane, cyclododecane, benzene and p-xylene.ALSO:Organic compounds, other than lactams, which form crystals and melt without decomposition are purified by adding to a melt of the crude compound the same substance in crude solid finely divided form while maintaining the melt in an adiabatic state and, after melting equilibrium is reached, separating crystals of the organic compound in purified form from the melt. Among compounds which may be purified by the process are, for example, cyclododecanol, cyclododecanone, cyclohexanone oxime, hexamethylene diamine, cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, w-cyanoundecanoic acid, cyclododecanecarboxylic acid, adipic acid, phenol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester and dimethyl terephthalate.
