Abstract

Amides or lactams are prepared by bringing an oxime in the vapour phase in contact with a catalyst consisting of or containing a phosphoric acid supported on a diatomaceous earth, e.g. kieselguhr. Specified types of oximes are cycloalkanone oximes, which produce lactams, and dialkyl, diaryl and alkylaryl ketoximes, and alkyl and aryl aldoximes. In an example cyclohexanone oxime is converted to e -caprolactam. According to the Provisional Specification, the catalyst may be a phosphoric acid containing catalyst generally; other supports mentioned are artificially prepared porous silica, and aluminium silicates such as fuller's earth, bentonite and montmorillonite.
