Abstract

Coloured regenerated cellulose threads are made by dispersing a pigment in a stable, viscous aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of a high molecular weight synthetic addition polymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid which is compatible with viscose, injecting the dispersion into a main stream of viscose and extruding the mixture of viscose and dispersed pigment into a coagulating bath to form a thread. The acrylic polymer may be polyammonium methacrylate or the corresponding sodium or potassium salt, or the sodium, potassium or ammonium salts of polyacrylic acid. The aqueous solution of the acrylic polymer preferably has a viscosity substantially the same as that of the viscose to which it is to be added. The pigment may be burnt chromium oxide, carbon black or titanium dioxide, acid- and alkali-stable vat dyes in the unreduced state, or azoic dyestuffs. The Provisional Specification states that the pigment may be dispersed in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinylpyrrolidone. Specifications 290,693 and 738,020 are referred to.
