Abstract

1,127,767. Artificial filaments containing dichroic ferric oxide. COURTAULDS Ltd. 1 Feb., 1966 [2 Nov., 1964], No. 44532/64. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] An artificial fibre contains a dispersion of dichroic, elongated ferric oxide particles having their major axes substantially parallel to the fibre axis and having an average particle diameter of 1 to 6 microns. Specified fibres include acrylic fibres, nylons and polyesters, in addition to natural fibres such as cellulose and proteins, for example casein. A preferred artificial fibre comprises a viscose rayon and contains a dispersion of ferric oxide particles in a concentration of from 0À5 to 2À0% by weight based on the weight of the cellulose. The ferric oxide particles may be acicular. In Example 1, ferric oxide particles having an average particle diameter range of between 2 and 4 microns are incorporated in a viscose in a concentration of 1À5% by weight based on cellulose. This is effected by forming a 50% by weight slurry of the particles in water, mixing the slurry into a small batch of viscose and then introducing this small batch into the main viscose batch at a ratio of 1: 10 by weight. The resulting pigmented viscose is wet spun in conventional manner and a yarn formed therefrom is woven into a plain weave fabric and over-dyed with an aqueous dye solution of a direct cotton dye, Chlorantine Fast Green F29LL (Colour Index Direct Green 65). The fabric has a marked dichroic effect appearing plum red at one angle and yellowish-green at another. Staple fibres suitable for carpet yarn may be similarly made (Example 2).
