Abstract

Coloured viscose rayon threads are produced by dispersing colouring matter in the presence of a dispersing agent in an aqueous stable viscous solution of a fibre-forming material compatible with viscose and preferably of substantially the same viscosity, injecting the dispersion into a stream of viscose by means of a gear-wheel pump, and extruding the viscose into a coagulating bath. The fibre-forming material is of a type which is coagulated when extruded into the type of bath used for coagulating viscose. The material may be casein dissolved in caustic soda solution or a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose dissolved in water or caustic soda solution. The colouring matter used is water-insoluble and chemically resistant to caustic soda, the coagulating bath and the desulphurizing agent used for treating the threads produced. It may consist of certain unreduced vat dyestuffs, azoic dyestuffs, carbon black or mineral pigments such as burnt chromium oxide or titanium dioxide. The dispersing agent may be a highly sulphonated castor oil, a sulphonated mineral oil or sodium cresylate. In an example, 64 kg. of a solution containing 10 per cent of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, having 0.45 carboxymethyl group per anhydroglucose unit, and 4 per cent of caustic soda and having a viscosity of 60 poises at 20 DEG C. are mixed with 35 kg. of Monolite Red 4 RHVS paste containing 1.25 per cent of solid pigment and 1.6 kg. of a highly sulphonated castor oil, and the mixture is filtered and stored under vacuum for 6 hours. The mixture is injected into a main viscose supply line at an injection ratio of 1 : 60 parts by weight and the viscose containing the mixture is extruded into an acid coagulating bath. The coloured dispersions may be made up in large quantities at a time and stored for considerable periods without the pigment settling out. Specifications 290,693, [Class 2 (ii)], and 711,977 are referred to.
