Abstract

885,386. Continuous pottery kilns. WEST MIDLANDS GAS BOARD. Jan. 18, 1960 [Jan. 16, 1959], No. 1622/59. Class 51 (2). In a continuous multiple tunnel pottery kiln with banks of superposed tunnels, each tunnel comprises a single row of floor tiles 10 and a single row of roof tiles 11 defining therebetween combustion chambers 31 and connected by midwall tiles 22 or side wall tiles 26. Each midwall tile 22 has a rib 23 running across the upper and lower faces and one end face and a groove 24 in the other end face, receiving the rib 24 of an adjacent midwall tile. Each floor tile 10 has a lower recess 12, side walls 13 with rebates 14 engaging the midwall tiles or side tiles and a transverse step 15 and overhanging flange 16 at opposite ends. Each roof tile is of substantially H-shaped configuration with a lower arch 17 and upper ribs 20 dividing the combustion chamber into three compartments and longitudinal rebates engaging the midwall or side tiles. The roof tiles also have end step joints as with the floor tiles, and the ribs 20 have recesses 21. Side tiles 26 have tongues 27 on their upper and lower surfaces engaging the rebates 14 of the roof and floor tiles. The midwall tiles and side tiles are made shorter than the roof and floor tiles, and are arranged so that joints between them do not coincide with joints between adjacent roof and floor tiles. Also, corresponding roof and floor tiles in adjacent tunnels in the same bank are turned end for end. Joints in roof and floor tiles in vertically adjacent tunnels are also staggered with respect to one another. As shown in Fig. 8, jointed ends 33, 34 of two floor tiles fit into the depressions 21 in the ribs of a roof tile in the tunnel below. The recess 12 of a floor tile also accommodates adjacent ends 35, 36 of the ribs of two roof tiles in the lower tunnel. The end faces of the ribs are inclined forming notches 37 by which combustion gases from burners 32 are evenly distributed in the partitioned combustion chambers 31. The kiln has a foundation of floor cover tiles 38 similar in configuration to the top halves of the roof tiles. Roof cover tiles 39 and side cover tiles 40 are also provided.
