Abstract

<PICT:0885358/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0885358/IV (a)/2> In a process and apparatus for homogenizing a highly viscous molten polymer (see also Group II), especially polyethylene, the material having a viscosity of at least 50,000 poises is forced through a narrow tortuous passageway of width 0,5 to 3 mm. In an example a linear low-pressure polyethylene is pumped through an arrangement according to Fig. 1 having 12 parallel channels of width 1,2 mm. at 175 DEG C. and at a rate of 20 g per min. There are 30 spinneret openings 5 having a diameter of 0,3 mm. and the threads may be drawn at a speed of 200 mm. per min. In another example an apparatus according to Fig. 2 is installed between the screw cylinder outlet and the blowing head of a film-blowing machine. The width of the concentric annular passages is 1,5 mm. The melt is supplied at 60 g per minute and 140 DEG C. and a film about 60 microns in thickness is drawn off at a rate of 2 m. per min.
