Abstract

845,601. Manufacture of glass fibres or threads. RIEDEL, J. C. W. J. W. O. E. M. Oct. 28, 1957 [Nov. 7, 1956], No. 33486/57. Class 56. In the continuous spinning of glass and like thermoplastic materials into fibre threads, the starting material 1, which may be plate glass, is melted continuously in a furnace 2 by members 3 and flows into a vessel 5 in which the level of melt is maintained so that rods 7 of glass are extruded under pressure of the melt through channels 6 which project below the vessel 5 so as to be cooled, the rods 7 being fed as by rolls 8 to a heating means 9 whence they are drawn out by a drum 10 into threads 11 which may be wound up on the drum as in Fig. 4 or drawn off as in Fig. 1 by guide and feed rolls 12, 13 and wound on a bobbin 14. As shown in Fig. 4, when a layer 19 of the yarn has been wound on the drum 10, a cutting tool 20 is pressed against the surface of the drum and moved in a direction parallel to the drum axis to remove a hank of parallel threads which may be wound on a bobbin. The speed of tool 20 may be regulated with the speed of spinning of the threads 11 so that it is in continuous operation.
