Abstract

885,273. Ornithopters. HARTMAN, E. Aug. 8. 1960 [May 8, 1959], No. 15941/59. Class 4. An ornithopter has movable wings 1, each of which has a rigid leading portion 4 of aerofoil section and a flexible trailing portion 5 which is movable up or down with respect to rigid portion 4 as the wing is moved upwards or downwards, portion 4 tapering in the outward direction so that its surface area is greatest at the inboard end of the wing and the surface area of portion 5 being greatest at the outboard end of the wing. Trailing portion 5. is composed of a number of overlapping flap sections 6, having rigid spars 7 connected to portion 4 and arranged so that air is confined beneath the wing when it is moved downwards but so that air can pass through the wings from top to bottom when the wing is moved upwards. Specification 851,352 is referred to
