Abstract

A syrup, for use in the production of mouldings by the bulk polymerization method, comprises from 20 to 50% of a low molecular weight polymer or copolymer of a methacrylic ester dissolved in a monomeric methacrylic ester, alone or in admixture with at least one other ethylenic copolymerizable monomer, the polymer or copolymer having an intrinsic viscosity in chloroform at 25 DEG C. of from 0,6 d 1/g. The comonomer must be one which does not cause adhesion between the moulded article and the surface of the mould. The polymer or copolymer is preferably in the form of beads of diameter 0,1 to 1 mm. obtained by emulsion polymerization. The comonomer is preferably an acrylate or methacrylate ester, e.g. ethyl acrylate, and the methacrylate monomer is preferably the methyl ester. Various other substances may be present in the syrup, such as plasticizers, lubricants, dyes, pigments, fillers or regulators (such as mercaptans, e.g. dodecyl mercaptan). The polymerization may be initiated by a promoter, e.g. lauroyl peroxide.
