Abstract
884,990. Motar bombs; mortars. AVIATION, MINISTER OF. June 26, 1958 [July 29, 1957], No. 24023/57. Classes 9(1) and 92. A mortar comprises a barrel 1, a firing chamber 3 mounted by trunnions 4 pivoted in blocks 5 slidable on rods 6, and a breech block 9 having a spigot 10 rotatable and slidable in a yoke 8. The breech block 9 has cam surfaces 12 co-operating with cam surfaces 13 on the yoke 8 whereby when the chamber 3 has been loaded with a bomb 19 and a propulsion cartridge 18 and a handle 14 on the block 9 is rotated to move the block forwards, the block 9 pushes on the cartridge 18 and urges the front end of the chamber 3 in sealing engagement with the rear end of the barrel 1, against the action of springs 16. After firing of the bomb the breech block 9 is retracted thus permitting the springs 16 to move the chamber 3 away from the barrel until the latter is arrested by stops 17 secured to the rods 6. The chamber 3 is then pivoted upon its trunnions 4 out of alignment with the barrel whereby the expended cartridge may be removed and a new bomb and cartridge inserted. As shown in Fig. 2, the forward part of the bomb receiving portion of the chamber 3 is of slightly smaller diameter than the rearward part, these two parts being connected by an inclined ramp 21. The bomb 19 has a groove 23 accommodating an L-section sealing ring 22 and when the bomb is loaded the engagement between the ring 22 and ramp 21 serves to correctly position the bomb within the chamber. Alternative arrangements of sealing and stop rings are described with reference to Figs. 3-7 (not shown).
