Abstract

A firearm comprises a breech mechanism slidable within a breech frame 7. The breech mechanism consists of a bolt head 1 mounted slidably within a breech bolt 9, spring 10 being interposed therebetween and tending to urge the head 1 away from the bolt 9. The bolt head 1 is locked in its firing position by a nib 3 which engages with one end in recess 15 in the bolt head, the other end of the nib being formed with a foot 5 preferably having four flat faces 16, 17, 18, 19. In the locked firing position the face 16 engages an abutment 6 of the breech frame 7. On firing the firearm, for example, through the hammer 23 striking the firing pin 14, the firearm recoils and, in response to the recoil, the breech bolt 9 is urged forwardly against the spring 10 to delay the unlocking of the bolt head 1, (Fig. 2, not shown). The breech bolt 9 is then urged rearwardly by the compressed spring 10 and by the residual gas from the fired cartridge, a face 22 of the breech bolt 9 engaging the face 18 of the nib foot 5 to slide the face 17 over the abutment 6 and withdraw the forward end of the nib 3 away from the bolt head recess 15, thus unlocking the bolt head 1, (Fig. 3, not shown). The bolt head 1 then recoils away from the breech to eject the spent cartridge.
