Abstract
1,179,863. Firearms. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 29 June, 1967 [5 July, 1966], No, 30131/67. Heading F3C. A firearm comprises a receiver 2, a barrel 4 attached to and extending from the receiver and a cylinder 24 having a plurality of chambers 26, 28 mounted within the receiver for rotation about a longitudinal axis, each chamber being adapted to be moved successively into alignment with the barrel 4. An operating rod 92 extends through the cylinder 24 and is connected thereto, as by a pin 102, for rotation therewith and relative axial movement thereto. The rod 92 is connected to a reciprocable forestock 94 for axial movement therewith and relative rotation thereto (Fig. 1, not shown). An operating rod cocking spring 124 is mounted about the rod 92 between a disc member 126 slidable relatively to the rod but is rotationally fixed thereto and a ratchet and cam mechanism 132, 116, the ratchet and cam mechanism being such that on rearward movement of the rod 92 the spring 124 is torsioned through 180 degrees. The cylinder 24 is normally locked in a chamber aligned position by a spring-loaded detent cooperating with a cut-out portion of the receiver but on further movement of the forestock 94 a rod pivotally connected thereto disengages the detent to allow the torsionally cocked spring 124 to rotate the rod 92 and hence the cylinder (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). When a further locking detent coincides with the cut-out, the pivotal rod is cammed away by the detent so that the detent projects into the cut-out. Forward movement of the forestock 94 disengages the pivotally connected rod and the detent. Forward movement of the forestock 94 also brings a projection 106 secured to the rod 92 into engagement with an arcuate surface of a pivoted breech locking member 60 to pivot the breech locking member 60 into engagement with a breech block 50, and to urge the breech block 50 into engagement with the cylinder 24 and the cylinder into engagement with the barrel 4 (Fig. 1, not shown). On the unlocking of the breech block 50 after a shot has been fired a cocking rod 74 pivoted on the locking member 60 engages a spring-loaded striker 6 to urge the striker 6 against its spring loading. The rear end of the striker 6 is engaged by a sear 16 which is trippable by a trigger 80. A safety mechanism is provided comprising a button 88 and a plate member 90, the plate member 90 co-operating with the upper surface of the sear in the safety position of the safety mechanism. A cartridge ejector assembly includes a plunger 154 and a plunger rod 158 having a spring 160 interposed therebetween, the plunger 154 being held in its inoperative position by a catch member 162 while the spring 160 is compressed by the plunger rod which moves with the forestock. Towards the end of the rearward movement of the forestock a release member 168 thereof engages the catch member 162 such that the plunger 154 is released to eject the spent cartridge in the chamber aligned therewith.
