Abstract

1,074,646. Automatic firearms. COLT'S Inc. July 6, 1965 [July 8, 1964], No. 28650/65. Heading F3C. A gas-operated automatic firearm comprises a bolt assembly 48 mounted in a chamber 14 of a receiver 12 for reciprocable movement between retracted and battery positions. The firearm is further provided with an auxiliary bolt closure mechanism 98 which includes a passage communicating with the chamber 14 and having housed therein a manually-operable actuating means 106, 108 spring-biased outwardly of the passage and a motion transmitting means in the form of a pawl connected to the actuating means and engaging in its operative position with one of a plurality of teeth 140 formed in the bolt assembly. The pawl is spring- biased into its operative position, this spring being compressed by the pawl due to a campin 122 co-operating with the pawl when the closure mechanism is in its retracted position (Figs. 2, 3, 4, not shown). A single depression of the manually operable actuating means locks the bolt whereas several depressions will urge the bolt assembly progressively along the chamber 14 towards the battery position. The bolt 70 is normally locked in the battery position by lugs 72 of the bolt co-operating with lugs 74 on the breech end of the barrel. On the firing of a cartridge high-pressure exhaust gas is fed back to a chamber 84 in the bolt assembly 48 to drive the bolt carrier 52 thereof rearwardly in the chamber 14, a pin 90 of the bolt 70 riding in a helical slot 92 in the bolt carrier 52 to rotate the lugs 72 clear of the lugs 74 and thus allow the bolt assembly 48 to compress the recoil spring 96. The bolt carrier 52 is held against rotation by a key 82 of the carrier co-operating with a longitudinal groove 94 of the receiver 12.
