Abstract

Linear polycarbonates having dihydric phenol derived units are cross-linked by heating them to 100-300 DEG C. with a formaldehyde-yielding compound, e.g. hexamethylenetetramine or paraformaldehyde. A very large number of specific polycarbonates are mentioned, the examples using a polycarbonate prepared from bisphenol-A and diphenyl carbonate or phosgene. The polycarbonates may be used as in (a) wire coatings (a solution of the polycarbonate and the formaldehyde-yielding compound, e.g. in chloroform, being applied to the wire which is subsequently heated), (b) fibres, films or laminating adhesives; or (c) moulding compounds, if desired with fillers such as wood flour, silica, carbon black or divided metal.
