Abstract
883,530. Gas-turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Jan. 13, 1959 [Oct. 14, 1957], No. 32079/57. Class 110 (3). A gas-turbine plant incorporates a radial flow annular rotary regenerative heat-exchanger which encircles the shaft 13 coupling the compressor 2 and a turbine of the plant. Compressed-air leaving the compressor is led through the rotary heat-exchanger matrix 4 and cools the power turbine roller bearing 21 on its way to the combustion chamber 5, the combustion gases then passing through the high-pressure turbine 7, past the adjustable guide vanes 8 and through the low pressure, compressor driving, turbine rotor 9, before exhausting radially through the heat input section of the matrix 4. The matrix 4 is rotatable by a mechanical drive 25, 28, 31 from the compressor turbine shaft, a final pinion 32 engaging a ring gear 33 on the matrix. Alternatively, the matrix may be by an hydraulic, electric or a flexible drive. The matrix may be formed of corrugated or plane sheet metal, and the Provisional Specification describes a method of forming the sheets into annular rings. In an alternative arrangement the power turbine is a low-pressure turbine and the compressor driving turbine a highpressure unit, permitting a " straight through " flow path. In a further embodiment a compressor is mounted externally of an outer casing enclosing the two turbines, the heat-exchanger axis passing through the shaft coupling the compressor and its driving turbine.
