Abstract

883,347. Magnetic separators. JONES, G. H. Jan. 1, 1960 [Jan. 28, 1959], No. 3116/59. Class 117. In separating magnetic particles from a fluid current, one or more pulses of short duration is/are imparted in the flow of water used for washing and removing magnetic particles collected on grooved plates situated in a magnetic field. Water for washing the collected magnetic particles is admitted to a chamber 15 of a fluid control unit 5 via a non-return valve 14, and scouring water at a higher pressure, for removing the magnetic particles, passes into the chamber through an inlet 11 and valve 12. An exit from the chamber connects with a housing 7 for grooved collector plates 8 and is controlled by a valve 10. One or more rams 21 extend into the chamber and create a pulsating movement in the water within the chamber; the rams are actuated by spring and cam means, Fig. 3 (not shown). The fluid to be treated passes from a hopper 6 into the housing 7 under the control of a feed valve 9 and the magnetic field is provided by electro-magnets. A funnel 16 is rockable to divert the fluid issuing from the housing 7, and permits non-magnetic particles, washings, and magnetic particles to be collected in separate containers. During operation of the apparatus and whilst a washing period is taking place, the scour valve 12 and the feed valve 9 are closed and the valve 10 to the housing 7 is open so that wash water passes through the non-return valve 14 and through the housing. The rams are released, preferably consecutively, and produce a surge of water past the valve 10. The rams may also be operated when the valve 12 is open, to increase the effectiveness of the scouring. A diaphragm may be used in place of a ram, and the ram or rams may be operated by solenoids, hydraulically or by compressed air. Specification 768,451 is referred to.
