An automatic firearm with a movable breech block and a trigger mechanism has a burst-of-fire limiting device comprising a displaceable toothed member 3, a drive member 6 situated between the breech block 7 and the member 3 from which it is normally held out of engagement by the breech block at 48 by which it is released to cause displacement of the member 3 by one tooth for each shot fired against a return spring 14 and thereafter returned to its normal position, a locking member 4 which during operation of the trigger retains the member 3 after each displacement, means 51 carried by the member 3 to engage and disconnect elements of the trigger mechanism so as to stop firing after a predetermined number of shots, said locking member 4 being released from the toothed member 4 upon release of the trigger to permit return by the spring 14 of the toothed member to its normal position. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show, in exploded form, an alternative embodiment to the construction in Fig. 1, in which the member 3 has one set of teeth 8 to engage the toe 39 of the drive member 6 and one 9 to engage the locking member 4, both sets being linear. In Figs. 3, 4, 5, only one, arcuate set of teeth 56 engage both the toe 39 and a toe 27 on the locking member 4. In Fig. 1 the disconnecting means 51 engages a lug 52 on the trigger part 5 to depress it on to the spring 44 and disconnect its fore end from the toe 43 of the sear 2 after the predetermined number of shots are fired. In Figs. 3, 4 and 5 the same disconnection is effected by engagement of the stud 51 with a projection 52 on the part 5 and when the trigger ceases to be pressed a stud 59 on it engages with the part 4 to lift the toe 27 clear of the teeth 56. Both the constructions illustrated are of weapons having a firing pin 45 independent of the breech block 7 but the device can also be applied to firearms having a firing pin integral with the breech block. A movable stop (not shown) can be employed to vary the number of teeth engaged and hence the number of shots and the toothed member can be held out of engagement by a stop to permit continuous firing.
