882,951. Plant protectors; receptacles for growing plants. LUCAS, S., and W. L. ENGINEERING Ltd. Sept. 12, 1960 [Sept. 16, 1959], No. 31542/59. Class 6(2). [Also in Group X] A device which is primarily for protecting graving plants from slugs and snails comprises a frame 11 which is open at top and bottom and is provided with either an integral or removable flange 12 provided with a sharp free edge 13. The frame is constructed from sheet metal, wood, synthetic resin, ceramic material, expanded metal or other open mesh material, or in some instances from a perishable material such as compressed paper or fibre which may be impregnated with a fertiliser. In use, the frame is located round the plants and its lower edge is pressed in to the soil a small distance, the flange 12 preventing slugs or snails from gaining access to the plants. The side walls of the flame may comprise two or more sections adapted to be folded or nested together and held in their erect position by hinges or interlocking comer joints. The frame preferably comprises a ledge 14 for receiving a sheet 15 of glass or expanded metal, in order to force small plants. Further, by covering the base of the frame with a perishable material, such as sacking impregnated with a fertilizer, seeds may be sown and germinated therein, and on introducing the frame into the ground, the base of the frame will rot and allow the seedlings to take root, whilst still protected by the side walls of the frame.
