Abstract

1535974 Containers for seedlings H A SPENCER 14 May 1976 19957/76 Heading A1E Seedlings are grown in individual cells, each cell having downwardly directed grooves formed in its side walls for directing roots downwardly to an aperture in its base, air circulating beneath the base causing roots penetrating the aperture to wither (air pruning) and thereby encourage branching of the roots. In one embodiment a container is formed by members 51, 52 hinged together at 62 and each having shoulders 53, 54 co-operating with the shoulders of the other member to form a series of cells. Grooves 68, 69 direct roots vertically downwardly to the bottom of the cell. In the opened condition of the container slits 67 are provided between each hinge 62; when the container is erected the slits open to form large drainage and air pruning apertures. Each alternate shoulder has a rebate 55 formed along most of its length, with a short rebate 57 formed on the opposite side near the top, intervening shoulders, and corresponding shoulders of the opposite member, being oppositely rebated at 56, 58 so that the non-rebated portion of one shoulder engages the rebated portion of the opposite shoulder to form an interlocking shiplap joint preventing intermingling of the plant roots. To facilitate filling the cells with growing medium and to hold the containers erected, they are placed back-to-back in a box having a grid base, and during growth of the plants the boxes are raised above the ground to ensure air pruning. In modifications the members 51, 52 are formed with frictionally engaging stud-andsocket connections to maintain the container erected. The cells may be straight sided and be provided with a growing medium-retaining bar extending across the bottom which is otherwise open. The members 51, 52 may be formed separately instead of being hinged together.
