In a method of planting a flower bed, bulbs are set in recesses 6 arranged in a decorative pattern on a plate 4 made of a material which depomposes under the action of water, the bulbs being planted in the earth together with the plate 4 which is provided with apertures 8 so that the bulbs may grow in the earth before the plate decomposes. The plate 4 may be covered by a similar plate as shown, by a layer of soil or a removable transparent foil, and the outer edges of the plate may be strengthened by a frame of wood or synthetic material.
