Abstract
Plant positioning template 10 comprises a base 11 having at least one upstanding wall to define at least one planting area on the base. There may be an inner wall 13 defining a first planting area and an outer wall 12 at or adjacent to the periphery of the base defining a second planting area. Each planting area may in use contain different coloured flowers or foliage. A plurality of apparatus may be releasably connected together to facilitate the planting of a required design. <IMAGE>
Description
Plant Positioning Template
This invention relates to a template to facilitate the positioning of plants within a given area, for example in a garden, to form a predetermined design or pattern, particularly by the selective positioning of differently coloured flowers or foliage.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus comprising a base and at least one wall upstanding from the base to define one or more shaped planting areas on the base.
Preferably the or at least one of the planting areas is in the shape of a letter of the alphabet or of a numeral, but any other shape or design may be employed.
The base may correspond in shape to the planting area, so that the wall is upstanding from the periphery of the base. Alternatively the base may extend beyond the confines of the planting area for example to form a generally square or rectangular bottom plate.
In a preferred embodiment, the base has mounted thereon an inner wall defining a first planting area, for example in the shape of a letter of the alphabet, and an outer wall at or adjacent to the periphery of the base defining an outer planting area, which may in use hold plants contrasting in colour or size to those in the inner planting area. There may also be provided means by which the outer planting area may be covered to prevent inadvertent planting therein in circumstances where it is required only to use the inner planting area. The cover means may take the form of a generally planar plate or lid extending from the inner wall to the outer wall to overlie the respective base area.
Preferably the base includes means permitting the drainage of excess water therethrough. For example there may be provided a plurality of drainage apertures though the base.
The apparatus preferably also includes means permitting the releasable connection thereof to one or more similar apparatus. The connecting means may conveniently be located either on the base or on the wall defining the planting area (the outer wall if there is more than one wall). The connecting means may take any convenient form, for example each apparatus may be provided with a plurality of through apertures on an outwardly directed rim mounted on the outer wall, so that a connecting clip may be inserted through aligned ones of the apertures.
An example of an apparatus constructed according to the invention will now be described by way of illustration only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig.1 is a perspective view of the apparatus;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a series of apparatus similar to that of Fig.1; and
Fig.3 is a side view of the apparatus of Fig.2 after filling with plants and positioning in a garden.
Referring to Fig.1, an apparatus 10, preferably moulded from a plastics material, comprises a generally square base 11 and an upstanding outer wall 12 around the periphery of the base 11. An inner wall 13, also upstanding from the base 11, defines, with an upstanding shaped block 13a inside the wall 13, a planting area in the shape of the letter A on the base. A series of drainage apertures 14 is provided in the base 11, within the area defined by the wall 13, to permit the drainage of excess water from the apparatus 10. An outwardly directed rim 15 extends from the free edge of each of two opposite sides of the wall 12. A locating aperture 16 adjacent to each end of each rim 15 permits the releasable fastening together by means of a clip (not shown) of two or more similar apparatus to form a row as shown in Fig. 2, in which the letters defined by the planting areas spell a word.Similar parts of each apparatus in Fig. 2 have been given the same reference numerals as used in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows the row of Fig. 2 in use. The planting area within the wall 13 of each apparatus is filled with suitable soil or compost and planted with for example, bulbs 17. Each apparatus 10 is then positioned below the surface of the soil in a decorative flower bed 18 and the row is connected by means of the apertures 16 on each rim 15. The row is then covered with soil, and when the bulbs 17 subsequently grow and flower the required word is displayed in the bed 18. When the bulbs 17 have finished flowering, the row may be removed from the soil, and each apparatus separated, emptied and cleaned ready for subsequent re-use in another display.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the invention. For example, the apparatus may be of any convenient shape or size, and may provide any required number and shape of planting areas. Where there are inner and outer planting areas, both may be provided with drainage apertures and planted as required.
Alternatively a cover may be provided to close any planting area not required for the formation of a particular design. This may, for example, take the form of a flat plate extending between the inner and outer walls defining the planting area. The connecting means may permit the connection of an apparaus to any number of further apparatus, and in positions other than those described and shown. The apparatus may further be modified such that the base corresponds in shape to the planting area, with the wall upstanding from the periphery of the base.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
