Abstract
The invention comprises a compound having the formula <FORM:0882894/IV (b)/1> where O is attached to the 3 or 4 position of the piperidine ring and R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-6 alkyl group; and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition and quaternary salts thereof, and a process for the preparation thereof by heating in an organic solvent a compound having the formula <FORM:0882894/IV (b)/2> where the hydroxy group is attached to the 3 or 4 position of the piperidine ring and R is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, and phenothiazine-10-carboxy-chloride, and recovering the desired compound from the precipitate. Illustrative products of the invention are N-methyl-4-piperidine - phenothiazine - 10 - carboxy - ester, N - ethyl - 3 - piperidine - phenothiazine - 10 - carboxy-ester and the hydrochlorides and methyl bromides thereof, N - methyl - 3 - piperidine - phenothiazine - 10 - carboxy - ester hydrochloride, and N-methyl-3-piperidine-phenothiazine-10-carboxy ester methyl bromide.ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition comprises a compound having the formula <FORM:0882894/VI/1> where O is attached to the 3 or 4 position of the piperidine ring and R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-6 alkyl group: or the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition or quaternary salts thereof and a suitable pharmaceutical carrier They are useful as anti-spasmodics, antitussives and tranquillizers.
