Abstract

882,432. Electro-dialytic cells. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. April 13, 1959 [May 13, 1958], No. 12446/59. Class 41. In the operation of an electro-dialysis unit comprising alternate concentrating and diluting cells with associated cation and anion permeable membranes, the H ion concentration controlled by passing the anolyte in which H ions are generated by the applied potential, through one or more of the concentrating cells and possibly also to the catholyte. The H ions may migrate through the permeable membrane in the anode compartment to the concentrating cell. By this transfer of H ions the precipitation of calcium and magnesium salts from hard water clogging the cell diaphragms is prevented. The flow of H ions may be controlled automatically by arranging a pH meter to monitor the acidity of the concentrating cells. A cationic membrane may be used adjacent the anode compartment through which H ions pass to the concentrating cell, but are excluded from the diluting co-product stream cells. Alternatively a part of the arolyte is diverted and passes to the concentrating cells.
