Abstract
857,850. Electrodialysis. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. Feb. 7, 1957 [Feb. 22, 1956], No. 26930/60. Divided out of 857,688. Class 41 An electrodialysis cell comprises at least three compartments 1 . . . 7 separated by ion-permeable barriers S, A, at least alternate barriers S being of a material which prevents liquid diffusion and permits unhindered passage of cations and anions, at least alternate compartments 2, 4, 6 being filled with a granular ion-exchange resin having exchange properties for ions of the same sign. Two main embodiments are described. In one, alternate barriers A are anionic-selective membranes and the compartments 2, 4, 6 on their cathode sides are filled with anion exchange material, as shown, or the alternate membranes are cationic-selective and the compartments on their anode sides are filled with cation-exchange material. In the other embodiment, all the barriers are of the material S and all the compartments are filled with ion-exchange material of the same sign. In either embodiment, an ion-selective barrier opposite in sign to any other barrier used in the cell may separate an electrode compartment from the rest, and is anionic if adjacent the anode and cationic if adjacent the cathode. The cell is employed as indicated to electrodialyse two solutions MX, NY flowing in counter-current, to produce MY, NX, specifically sodium chromate and sulphuric acid to produce sodium sulphate and chromic acid, or lithium sulphate and caustic soda to produce lithium hydroxide and sodium sulphate.
