Abstract

733,234. Purifying liquids. NEDERLANDSE ORGANISATIE VOOR TOEGEPASTNATUURWETENSCHAPPELIJK ONDERZOEK TEN BEHOEVE VAN NIJVERHEID, HANDEL EN VERKEER. Nov. 13, 1952 [Nov. 15, 1951], No. 28672/52. Class 46. [Also in Group XXXVI] In a three-compartment cell for the electrolytic desalting of liquids, selective membranes are employed and the anode compartment is provided with a cation-exchanger and if desired the cathode compartment with an anion exchanger; the anode membrane is preferably anion-selective and the cathode membrane cation-selective. In a first stage, liquid to be desalted is introduced into each compartment and direct current is passed through the cell, the salt solution in the centre compartment being desalted; in a second stage, fresh liquid to be desalted is passed through the anode and/or cathode chambers for desalting with simultaneous reconversion of the ion-exchanger. Specified anion-exchangers are an organic macromolecular substance containing quaternary ammonium groups, or styrenedivinylbenzene co-polymers containing quaternary ammonium groups. The specified cation exchange is a styrene-divinylbenzene co-polymer containing sulphonic acid groups. The anode membrane may be regenerated cellulose foil covered with coagulated protein and the cathode membrane may be a cation-exchanger containing sulphonic acid groups applied to a plastic gauze in gel form. According to a modification shown in Fig. 2, the three-compartment cell consists of an anode 1, an anode compartment 2 provided with a cation exchanger, an anion-selective membrane 3, a middle cell 4, a cation-selective membrane 5, a cathode-compartment 6 provided with an anion-exchanger, and a cathode 7. In addition the electrode compartments contain membranes 9, 10 which may be ion-selective and serve to separate compartments 8 and 11 from the main electrode compartments 2, 6 carrying the ionexchangers. In the first stage salt solutions are passed through compartments 4, 8 and 11, the solution passing through compartment 4 being desalted. Examples relate to the production of a drinkable water from a brackish water.
