Abstract
1,268,504. Electrodialysis,electro-osmosis. M. BIER. April 14, 1969 [April 15, 1968], No. 18938/69. Heading C7B. An aqueous solution e.g. of ammonium sulphate or suspension, particularly containing a biological colloid such as dog or rabbit serum, hog cholera antiserum, plasma fractions derived therefrom or globulin fractions is concentrated, purified and/or desalted by subjecting it to electro-osmosis and electrodialysis across dialysing ion-permeable membranes e.g. of regenerated cellulose against an external aqueous medium containing a polyelectrolyte (containing a preponderance of negatively or positively charged ionized groups with molecules or particles sufficiently large to be retained by the dialysing membrane), e.g. 0À07-8% by weight of polyacrylic acid, poly (ethylene-maleic acid), poly (methyl vinyl ether-maleic acid), polysilicic acid, polyphosphoric acid, or salt thereof. As shown in Fig.4 the process may be carried out with the aqueous solution or suspension 42 received in one or more cells 40 made from ion-permeable membranes suspended in a bath 1 of the aqueous medium 2 containing the electrodes 3. Fig. 1 shows an assembly 10 of ion-permeable membranes 14 spaced apart by spacer plates 12 in which each sample chamber is separated from the next by an aqueous medium compartment. Medium 2 is preferably circulated through heat exchangers or directly cooled. The spacer plates are provided at the top and bottom with registering ports 18, 20 connected to feed inlets and outlets for the two solutions respectively, and contain windows to expose the membranes held therebetween. Specification 3,079,318 is referred to.
