776,469. Electrodialysis. NEDERLANDSE ORGANISATIE VOOR TOEGEPASTNATUURTWETENSCHAPPELIJK ONDERZOEK TEN BEHOEVE VAN NIJVERHEID, HANDEL EN VERKEER. Dec. 17, 1954 [Dec. 17, 1953], No. 36607/54. Class 41. An electrodialytic apparatus comprises an anion-exchanger 15 and a cation-exchanger 16, disposed in a chamber 5 bounded on two sides by ion-permeable membranes 19, 20, the chamber having an inlet 11 and an outlet 12 for liquid to be deionized, e.g. water, and deionized liquid respectively, the membranes bordering rinsing chambers 3, 4 having inlets 7, 9 and outlets 8, 10 respectively for rinsing liquid, there being means, e.g. electrodes 1, 2, for maintaining a potential difference across the membranes 19, 20 and the chamber 5. The ion-exchangers 15, 16 may be arranged alternately in strata which are parallel or perpendicular to the flow of electric current. The membranes 19, 20 may be anion- and cation-selective respectively, or they may be equally permeable to all ions, e.g. being of parchment or porous ceramic. A number of chambers 5 may be disposed for parallel liquid flow therethrough, being separated by intermediate rinsing chambers which may be supplied with the same liquid.
