Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance selectivity of separation of metal ions by a simple and convenient method by forming a complex of a specified metal ion by adding a chelating agent to a treating liquid and inhibiting the permeation of the ion through a membrane. CONSTITUTION:An electrodialytic cell 1 constituted of an anion exchange membrane 5, cation exchange membrane 6, anode 7, and cathode 8, is used, and a chelating agent such as ethylenediamine tetraacetate, etc., is added to a soln. contg., for example, Na<+>, Fe<3+>, Ca<2+> as a sample liquid. In this stage, the pH of the soln. is adjusted to a condition where the metal to be separated forms a complex depending on an equilibrium constant for the formation of the metal complex. The sample liquid is circulated through an intermediate chamber 2, and electrodialysis is performed by circulating the electrode liquid through the cathode chamber 4 and the anode chamber 3. Thus, Na<+> and Ca<2+> permeate the membrane selectively, and are removed from the initial sample liquid.
