Abstract

792,623. Electrodialysis. IONICS, Inc. April 26, 1955 [May 6, 1954], No. 11970/55. Class 41. A method of changing the concentration of an electrolytic solution by passing it through the diluting chambers 15 of an electrodialysis unit comprising alternate concentrating chambers 13 and diluting chambers 15 defined between alternate anion- and cation-permeable membranes A, K, a further solution being passed through the concentrating chambers, comprises passing the two solutions in parallel through the chambers 13, 15 at rates which are controlled, e.g. by valves 32, 74, to keep the readings or pressure gauges 36, 78 equal, so as to maintain equal pressures on opposite faces of the membranes A, K, at any point thereof. Sea water, cane juice, glycerine or whey is delivered from a pipe 2 to the diluting chambers 15 by a pipe 38, returning by a pipe 40 to a tank 18 to be recirculated by a pump 30. Two modes of operation may be employed. In " batch " operation a cell 28 responsive to the conductivity of the liquid in pipe 40 closes a valve 20 and opens a valve 22 when a certain degree of dilution is achieved, a valve 14 being operated by a float in the tank 18 to admit fresh liquid. In " continuous recirculation " operation the valve 14 is held partially open, dilute liquid being continuously withdrawn at 19. Similar apparatus deals with the concentration stream entering at 50, and with an electrode stream, which may be an aqueous solution of sodium sulphate or dilute sulphuric acid, entering at 100. The pH value of the electrode stream may be maintained by introducing acid into a tank 118 corresponding to tank 18. If desired, a single source of liquid may be used for concentration and electrode, or electrode and dilution streams, or for all three streams, by means of pipes 42, 84. The membranes A, K are separated by baffles which define a tortuous path for the liquids. Specifications 702,002, [Group XXVI], 772,861 and 772,862 are referred to.
