Abstract

Compounds of formula <FORM:0881615/IV (a)/1> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals, or polar atoms and/or groups such as halogens, ester, ether, nitrile groups or hydrocarbon radicals substituted by halogens, are polymerized or copolymerized in the presence of an organic boron compound of formula BR3, where R is an alkyl group, as catalyst, together with a polar organic compound as actuator. It is preferred that the polymerization or copolymerization takes place at below 0 DEG C. Specified monomers are vinyl and vinylidene chloride and fluoride, trifluoro-ethylene, perfluoroethylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, thechlorofluoroethylenes, vinyl acetate, vinyl ethers, methyl, ethyl, butyl and allyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, allyl halides, acrylonitrile, styrene and ethylene. More than one monomer may be used. Boron tributyl is the specified catalyst and methyl and ethyl alcohols, acetic anhydride, ethylene glycol, dibutyl sebacate, dioctyl phthalate and dimethyl formamide the polar organic compounds.
