Abstract

881,489. Aerials. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. July 12, 1960 [Nov. 2, 1959], No. 24318/60. Class 40(7). An aerial suitable for use on aircraft comprises a waveguide, a plurality of radiating means, and a -ferrite and control means for each radiating means. In a first embodiment the waveguide 12 has a number of slots 32 (only 32D shown) along the length. A powerabsorbing load is placed at the end 20 of the guide. A core 38 is mounted in the guide, the core being either a continuous cylinder of ferrite or a number of short lengths of ferrite having non-ferrite sections between them in the region of the slots. Coils 36 are wound about the guide between the slots, and each coil with its associated section of ferrite forms a field rotating means. By varying the current in a coil the degree of field rotation may be varied so that degree of radiation from the following slot is also varied. The coil 34H allows rotation of the field such that there is no undesirable reflection from the power absorbing load. By adjustment of the currents in the various coils. 36 the radiations from the slots may be combined into a beam. To permit steering of the beam an auxiliary waveguide 44 is associated with each slot 32, each guide 44 having a ferrite core 46 (only 46D shown) and a coil 44. Change in current in a coil 44 causes change in phase of the radiated energy, so that by control of the current in all the coils 44 the beam may be steered in any direction in the plane of the slots. Further aerials of the form described above may be added, as exemplified by the second guide 14, thus enabling the beam to be steered in more than one plane. In a second embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the waveguide is bent into a circle, the auxiliary guides lying on radii, and commutator means is provided for distributing current to the coils on the main and auxiliary guides. In this way the radiated beam is rotated at the speed of the commutator and by stacking the guides steering of the beam in two planes is possible.
