Abstract
842,246. Aerials; radio direction finding. LEAR Inc. Nov. 4, 1958 [Jan. 3, 1958], No. 35312/58. Class 40(7). An aerial comprises a thin slab of magnetic material 10, having a pair of flat and parallel faces, which is wound with a pair of windings 12, 14, Fig. 1, so disposed in relation to each other that the mutual inductance between them is small and preferably zero. As used in an aircraft direction finding system the aerial is sunk in a recess in the aircraft skin and is fixed in relation to the craft. The ends 26, 28 of winding 12 and 30, 32 of winding 14 are taken to the stator windings 35, 36 of a goniometer, Fig. 2. A receiver 46, fed from the rotor coil 44 of the goniometer, controls a motor 52 to drive the rotor to a null position. The aerial core always has a plane of symmetry perpendicular to its faces but its shape may be modified to compensate for quadrantal errors. The windings may be wound on such cores to cross each other at angles other than 90 degrees. Figs. 8, 9, 10 (not shown).
